Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

Breast augmentation with fat grafting is a minimally invasive procedure to restore a more youthful appearance to your breasts, as well as correcting any breast irregularities or asymmetries.

About

Fat grafting, also known as a fat transfer, is a process by which fat cells are harvested from one part of the body and injected into another.

Fat grafting to the breast uses your own body fat as a natural, living filler to achieve precise, long-lasting breast augmentation. This surgical technique consists of two procedures performed on the same day: first harvesting the fat and then placement into the breasts.

To begin, a substantial amount of fat is harvested from your thighs, stomach or buttocks, and then injected gently through small incisions in the breast and placed precisely where needed.

Advantages of fat transfer

There are many advantages to this procedure:

  • Fat is completely natural substance that comes from your own body
  • Harvesting of the fat can be used to enhance your body proportions
  • The breast volume can be increased by one cup size
  • Reduced possibility of scarring due to minimal incisions
  • Fat grafting can be very effective in enhancing the appearance after breast reconstruction
  • The procedure can also soften the appearance of existing implants.

Disadvantages of fat transfer

Breast augmentation with a fat transfer is however, a longer procedure than traditional breast augmentation. The recovery time is longer due to both donor and recipient sites needing to heal. Furthermore the procedure also causes more interference than with implants as fat cells transplanted into the breast may form calcifications, oil cysts and scarring that can mimic or obscure breast cancer.

A revision procedure may be required due to possible absorption of transferred cells. A fat transfer is not recommended for significant breast augmentation.
